DELICIOUS LINKS

The reason for why I have posted this link up is because in my independent study i will be focusing on the representation of females, and how they are seen in British Asian films. I believe that this link will be very useful for my study and will help me a lot.

This is also another link that i have posted up. This will be useful because one of the areas that i will be heavily focusing on is going to be Race and ethnicity.

My response to the review...
well, the review was quiet interesting when i had read it. I myself have not seen the movie 'Provoked', but having a look at the trailers and promos I'm really tempted to watch the movie. When i had seen the trailer at first it had grabbed my attention and had touched my heart, seeing Aishwarya getting abused by a men just shows that yet today we are living in a patriarchal society and that male dominance still exists today. However, Aishwarya's stunning performance and her 'turning the tables', showed that patriarchy can be rejected and that women should fight back. I have to say that Aishwarya has done a stunning job and that the film looks really interesting to watch. I will agree with the review that it is a really good film.

Film review on Provoked.
Sitting in the theatre for just 113 minutes and watching the torture unfold on the battered Punjabi housewife doesn't sound like a new concept, does it? But Provoked is out to establish no new notion.
It once happened. And now it's been told. And told with great power and precision.
Inspired by the real life traumatic story of Kiranjit Ahluwalia's biography, Circle of Light, Provoked traces the anguish and agony and delivers an act that would leave everyone thinking.
Unable to bear the brutality and recurring rapes by her alcoholic husband Deepak Ahluwalia (Naveen Andrews), the battered Kiranjit (Aishwarya Rai) sets him on fire and ends the saga of her 10-year-long assaulted and abused married life.
Kiranjit is charged with murder awarded life-imprisonment. Yet, the lady feels liberated!
Although she gradually learns to accept her life within the jail, her case is taken up by a non-profit group of Asian social workers running under an organisation called Southall Black Sisters. They bring her plight to the attention of the media by organising rallies and gathering public support.
And as luck would have it, Kiranjit's cellmate, Veronica Scott (Miranda Richardson) happens to the sister of Lord Edward Foster (Robbie Coltrane), a respected Queen's Counsel. Lord Foster takes up Kiranjit's cause and the English court in an unprecedented judgement pardons the accused and redefines the word 'Provocation' in the British law forever.
Mundhra's direction is very binding. Neither does he lose track nor does he overload the script with unwanted emotions and drama. The film immediately kick-starts with Kiranjit taking revenge from her husband.
The director has also, correctly chosen all his actors.
Aishwarya has done a good job. She has definitely brought forth the trauma and torture borne by the character. And the absence of her overdone make-up and glamorous good-looks has made her look more attractive (!) and fit into the role well.
Although it would be wrong to say that no other actress could have done a better job, the one reason why Aishwarya's presence makes a difference is because the actress is a brand value and a reason for many cinegoers to watch a film.
Naveen Andrews is brilliant. The actor fits so perfectly into his role that you would immediately get the wrong vibes.
To put it simply… you'll hate him from the word go!
Nandita Das being Nandita Das has performed well. However, it would be slightly wrong to say that the actress has put in her best. There are times when you feel she has gone overboard with her act.
Miranda Richardson is beautiful in her performance and her appearance.
All other actors too have done a good job.
Although Mundhra had the script served on his platter, but turning words into action is no easy business. And that's where Provoked takes the cake.
It doesn't have anything for the masala lovers nor for the comic freaks. It's a film of substance. A film based on real life. A film that would move many. A film that would make a difference in many a lives.
It's more than all this and if missed it, you would miss a lot!

This is another trailer that i have posted up on the blog. Sorry, i cannot find any clips of the movie on you tube so i am just posting up different trailers. This is one of the trailer that i really liked. The reason for this being is because the contrapuntal music, is so dramatic and it fits well with the trailer, and the audience are yet again able to identify with the protagonist and have some sort of sympathy. The use of dip to black are also seen in the trailer which is quiet effective as it makes the audience be in suspense and creates enigma because they want to know what is going to come up next on the screen. The edits seen are not too fast but yet are not to slow, it gives the audience enough time to have some sort of reaction.
Image Analysis of 'Provoked'
On the left is Naveen Andrews, called in Provoked Deepak, and on the right is Aishwarya. The image is showing us Naveen abusing Aishwarya, as Aishwarya's facial expression shows fear.
Analysing this image, we can talk about many stuff. Firstly looking at the camera angle, we can say that it is a medium shot of both Naveen and Aishwarya. This gives the chance for the audience to identify with the characters in the movie. Furthermore, looking at both their facial expression, Naveen looks aggressive as his eyes have got the anger in to them, where as Aishwarya is looking all scared and shutting the door. This clearly shows the audience that who the protagonist is. We can also say that male dominance still exist today and that we are leaving in a Patriarchal society.

Independent Study Proposal
Title: Provoked
Director: Jag Mundra
Genre: Drama
Date of Release: 6th April 2007
Hypothesis: Male dominance still exists today and we live in a patriarchal society. I am going to investigate: ‘How has race and sexuality been seen in British Asian film in particular reference to ‘Provoked’?.
M: The use of close up on Aishwaryar’s eyes and the tears falling out makes the audience be able to identify with who is the protagonist.
I: Eros International
G: Drama, as it is based on a true story, also it can be seen as the genre of Justice, and revenge.
R: Provoked focuses on heavily on male dominance and how we live in a patriarchal society. The use of domestic violence makes the women look inferior to the male.
A: The target audience for this film will be roughly young adults aged about 17+, however the secondary audience can be adults/family.
I: the ideology that the film is setting out is that do not let men rule the females and to fight back and to reject the patriarchal society. It is heavily based on justice.
N: The story line for this film, starts off by a Nuclear family and then by the use of domestic violence, it ruins their relationship.
S: It can be said that we live in a patriarchal society, and that today men’s are seen as being ‘Breadwinners’ and that women’s are seen as being inferior and subordinate towards the men’s.
H: I will be looking at how women’s were seen in other British Asian films such as ‘Bend it like Beckham’ and ‘East is East’, in reference to my hypothesis.
E: The film has been a great hit over the UK as it was based on a true story. It can be said that it made great amount of money in the box office.
P: Feminist fighters will be against the idea of male dominance and domestic violence. They will fight back.
Theories: Propp will be a good theorist to use in my study as he talks about hero and villain. Also Barthes will be good as he talks about enigma codes, and they are many enigma codes that can be seen in ‘Provoked’
Where to research: I will be looking at books that talk mainly about women representation and how they have been portrayed. I will also be looking at the internet and have a look at past films and theorist that talk about women.
