Plan for my independent study

· In your introduction, make sure you write out clearly what the question is you are focusing on, and the quote from the movie/text I am going to be looking at. ‘I lived a life of beatings and degradation’.

· In the introduction, highlight the main points, in this case say how life was seen in the early days, such as women and representation, and introduce the text roughly to the examiner. (Provoked, Jag Mundhra, and the themes)

· 2nd/3rd paragraph talk about old historical texts (in this include stuff like masculinity, femininity and how genders have changed and developed. Some of the historical texts that can be linked to my essay are ‘Mother India’, Devdas (old) East is East, Bend it Like Beckham) (R) (G)

· 4th paragraph talk about political issue that are /were in the Media, and how it had brought a change in today’s generation. For example you can talk about the Women’s movement, and the Second World War, how women’s took over men’s job and war in the munitions. Make reference to Rosa Parks how she refused to give her seat up for the white. She was the first female fighter. (G) and (R) (political)

· 5th paragraph bring in theorist and authors and start to make points and add quotes in the study. Mention stuff like how females were seen to be sex symbols in the early days (Laura Mulvey) link this to my study/text talk about Aishwarya, how she is not seen to be a ‘sex symbol’. (Male gaze) refer to Gauntlett. French Feminist Simone De Beauvoir, talks how women are subordinate to men. (R) (G) (Theory and Theorist)

· 6th Paragraph talk about how the Asian culture has changed and developed throughout the years. For example you can look at texts such as ‘Goodness Gracious Me’, Kumars at Number 42. Make notes on issues in Indian, Amritsar Massacre. Talk about the society now (2000) it has become more westernised, such as ‘Bend it like Beckham’. (Society) (Genre)

· 7th and 8th paragraph- talk about gender as a whole. So how females were seen to be in the early days (Mulvey) how they are seen to be now (Independent) how males were seen in the early days (superior) how they are seen to be now (New Man)

· 9th paragraph- talk about racism in the British society and how the media portrays it to be. (Social)

· 10th paragraph- make reference to ‘Provoked’, talk about the main themes the movie covers, such as Abuse, Gender, Relationships, and how Asian’s are being portrayed. Do this throughout and make systematically links, throughout the essay. Heavily look at texts such as East is East, and Bend it like Beckham.

10th paragraph- Get loads of short embedded quotes from various types of books, especially Media, Gender and Identity, David Gauntlett. Refer back to issues such as men's in movies and television how they were seen to be dominant, and had a major role in the media. Females had a less role, seen to be subordinate to the men.

11th paragraph- talk about the changes in female role. So look at active roles such as Lara Croft, in Tomb Raider and look at Uma Thurman in Kill Bill. Then compare it to the passive roles. Looking back in the early days how female roles were seen, such as houswife, and inferioir to the men. (Provoked-Aish a typical Housewife)
