Independent Study Proposal

Title: Provoked
Director: Jag Mundra
Genre: Drama
Date of Release: 6th April 2007

Hypothesis: Male dominance still exists today and we live in a patriarchal society. I am going to investigate: ‘How has race and sexuality been seen in British Asian film in particular reference to ‘Provoked’?.
M:
The use of close up on Aishwaryar’s eyes and the tears falling out makes the audience be able to identify with who is the protagonist.
I: Eros International
G: Drama, as it is based on a true story, also it can be seen as the genre of Justice, and revenge.
R:
Provoked focuses on heavily on male dominance and how we live in a patriarchal society. The use of domestic violence makes the women look inferior to the male.
A:
The target audience for this film will be roughly young adults aged about 17+, however the secondary audience can be adults/family.
I:
the ideology that the film is setting out is that do not let men rule the females and to fight back and to reject the patriarchal society. It is heavily based on justice.
N:
The story line for this film, starts off by a Nuclear family and then by the use of domestic violence, it ruins their relationship.
S: It can be said that we live in a patriarchal society, and that today men’s are seen as being ‘Breadwinners’ and that women’s are seen as being inferior and subordinate towards the men’s.
H: I will be looking at how women’s were seen in other British Asian films such as ‘Bend it like Beckham’ and ‘East is East’, in reference to my hypothesis.
E: The film has been a great hit over the UK as it was based on a true story. It can be said that it made great amount of money in the box office.
P: Feminist fighters will be against the idea of male dominance and domestic violence. They will fight back.
Theories: Propp will be a good theorist to use in my study as he talks about hero and villain. Also Barthes will be good as he talks about enigma codes, and they are many enigma codes that can be seen in ‘Provoked’
Where to research: I will be looking at books that talk mainly about women representation and how they have been portrayed. I will also be looking at the internet and have a look at past films and theorist that talk about women.
